Pink auto have been intended as a safe public transport system for women, and Gurgaon Traffic Police had relaunched pink autos back in January 2013 too. Despite an attempt to make the project a success, and relaunching pink auto service twice, response has been limited. Pink autos were first introduced in 2010 owing to public transport incidents reported by women.

In its second attempt, pink autorickshaws were equipped with a panic button, and GPS system. About twenty pink autos were registered for the service but often they’re not found to be plying.

Pink auto service in Gurgaon

In February 2014, pink autos were pressed into service in Thiruvananthapuram. Women can alos call the police control room (100), request for an autorickshaw. The pink auto avatr was slightly different here and instead of a pink roof, they are regular yellow and black rickshaws with a ‘women friendly auto’ sticker affixed. The project began with 150 pink auto units with plans to grow that number to thousands.

In 2014, Chief minister Naveen Patnaik flagged off 200 pink autorickshaws at Bhubaneshwar. Drivers in charge of these vehicles have been specially trained on howto behave with women passengers. The pink auto service in Orissa furthers women’s safety in a state where OSRTC women special buses too ply.

Ranchi police too considered a pink auto rickshaw service equipped with GPS. A ranchi official attributed the idea to Indian Railways that operates ladies-special compartments. The proposal looked to introduce 500 pink auto-rickshaws to the state transport department.
