2020 Hyundai i20 was launched last month in India – First month sales are at over 9k units

November’20 proved to be another good month for the motown with most segments posting decent growths over last year, all of this, despite the ongoing pandemic. The premium hatchback segment too recorded a healthy 15% growth over last year. Let’s have a look at brand-wise performance for November’20 sales.

Baleno continues to Dominate

The best selling premium hatchback in the country continues to be the Baleno from Nexa. Despite the launch of the new generation i20, which is its closest rival, sales of Baleno have majorly remained consistent when compared to its sales in the month of November’19.

In Nov’20, Nexa managed dealer dispatches of 17,872 units whereas in the same month last year, it had managed dealer dispatches of 18,047 units. Overall sales de-grew by a marginal .97% which is commendable considering the increased competition in the category. However, when compared with October’20 sales, sales did de-grew by 18.6% in the month of November’20. Market share of Baleno in its segment went down from 51% in October’20 to 46% in the month of November’20.

i20 – The Korean European

The 2020 i20 from Hyundai had been a much-awaited product in the Indian market. However, when compared with November’19, sales of the i20 did degrew by 13% in the month of November’20. Sales numbers went down from 10,446 units in Nov’19 to 9,096 units in Nov’20. On a month-over-month basis, i20 registered a 8.3% growth as it saw its sales increase from 8,399 units to 9,096 units.

Despite its not-so pocket-friendly pricing the i20 has received good response from the customers. As of now, the sales numbers have been majorly a factor of production and not of demand. Once the initial frenzy around the new product settles down, it will be interesting to see how sales numbers look like, 4-5 months from now.

Altroz – The Dark Horse

Altroz from Tata Motors has been doing exceedingly well. In its first year, the hot-hatch has gained a market share of around 16% which is brilliant considering the presence of heavy-weight competitors like Baleno and 2020 i20. When compared with last month, Altroz recorded a minor dip in sales of around 470 units. However, dealer dispatch numbers of 6,200+ are still pretty healthy in our opinion. Altroz is the only car in the segment to have 5 star safety rating.

Glanza, FreeStyle, Polo and Jazz figures

Glanza, the Toyota badged Baleno recorded a 5% increase in sales from 2,313 units in November’19 to 2,428 units in November’20. In comparison to October’20, sales degrew by around 18% or 550 units. Ford’s Freestyle managed to register a strong 80% growth in sales when compared to sales performance in the same month, last year. Sales numbers went up from 632 units to 1,134 units in Nov’20.

VW’s Polo recorded sales decline from 1,702 units in November’19 to 1,130 units in November’20. Honda’s Jazz, which at one point of time commanded the 3rd spot in the sales chart has now slipped to the bottom of the charts. Sales of Jazz did improve from 341 units in Nov’19 to 633 units in Nov’20, but this delta too wasn’t enough to help the Jazz command even a 2% market share in the premium hatch-back category. It will be interesting to see what plans Honda has for the Jazz in the Indian market.
