Rane TRW Airbag Plant inaugurated by Nigel Harris

Rane TRW Steering Systems will be supplying airbags to two existing customers Mahindra and Ford first. It will start supplies to Renault-Nissan and others in due course.

Rane TRW Steering Systems inaugurated a new Airbag manufacturing plant. This plant, adjacent to the Seatbelt plant in SingaperumalKoil, Chennai, was inaugurated by Mr. Nigel Harris, Managing Director and President, Ford India. The new plant is expected to be ready to meet demands by October 2017.

Rane TRW Steering Systems Pvt Ltd, 50:50 joint venture between Rane Group and ZF TRW, will be pricing these airbags at about INR 1,800-2,500 each which will not include an electronic control system which it also requires.

Rane also has a dedicated plant set-up inside Tata Nano plant in Sanand, Gujarat. Photo above shows the inside of the new Airbag plant in Chennai.

The newly inaugurated plant is constructed at an investment of INR 18 crores. It will have capacity to produce approximately 5,00,000 airbags per annum which will be increased to 10,00,000 units over the next two years when additional investment to the tune of INR 5-8 crores will be pumped in.

The new Airbag producing plant is located in close proximity to the Seatbelt producing unit which opened in 1997. These two plants have a total of 450 employees. A long list of clients for both Seatbelts and Airbags produced by Rane TRW’s Occupant Safety Division includes Ford India, Renault Nissan, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles. While the company is enhancing localization to ensure more economical products, 15% of Seat belts produced are also exported to countries like Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam and Thailand.
