Renault plans Datsun type budget brand: To be made in association with Nissan
According to unconfirmed reports, Renault is planning to launch a new range of low cost cars to grow in terms of volume. First product in the series, Renault XBA hatchback, will be revealed next year. Prices of the new budget car line-up is said to start at around 3,500 EUR (Rs. 2.68 lakhs approx.).
As per the French Les Echos newspaper, Renault will take take the next step in budget car market, 10 years after the launch of Dacia Logan low-cost car. By early 2015, the French manufacturer will take final decision on the new portfolio.
The low-cost vehicle line-up is said to consist of four models. All of them would be based on a new platform, referred to as the CAMM, which is developed in association with Japanese carmaker Nissan. The model range would include one in each essential body type; a hatchback, a sedan, an SUV and a 7-seater people mover.
Said models are claimed to be produced in Renault’s manufacturing plant in Tangier, Morocco; that is if the lineup would reach European market.
The first model to be unveiled next year is the Renault XBA hatchback, set to launch in India. It is based on Renault Nissan’s Common Module Family platform (CMF-A) that is also shared with Datsun Redi-Go. The platform was originally created for all-new Datsun i2, which was then shared and improvised for XBA. Same model is also planned for Brazil, under codename XBB.
The second product, an MPV, has already started testing in Europe.
