Renault is set to make a serious comeback in India with the next-generation Duster, and a key highlight of the SUV will be the introduction of a strong-hybrid powertrain. Confirmed during its official reveal, the strong-hybrid variant of Renault Duster will be introduced around Diwali 2026, expanding the SUV’s appeal in an increasingly competitive mid-size SUV segment.

With this move, Renault Duster will join rivals such as Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder and Victoris in offering a strong-hybrid petrol option, while also competing directly with conventional petrol SUVs like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the upcoming Tata Sierra.

Strong-hybrid powertrain details

Renault Duster strong-hybrid uses the brand’s E-Tech hybrid system, drawing from Renault’s global experience in electrification and Formula 1-derived energy management technologies. The setup combines a naturally aspirated 1,789 cc four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors. One electric motor, rated at 20 hp, functions as a generator, while the second motor, producing 49 hp, directly drives the wheels.

The combined system output stands at 160 PS and 172 Nm of torque. Power is supported by a 1.4 kWh battery pack, enabling the SUV to operate in electric-only mode for a significant portion of urban driving. Renault claims that up to 80 percent of city driving can be completed in EV mode, although official fuel efficiency figures have not yet been disclosed.

The petrol engine, codenamed HR18, has been developed by Horse Powertrain, a powertrain solutions company jointly owned by Renault and Geely. Horse Powertrain specialises in combustion engines, hybrid systems and transmissions, and the HR18 unit forms the core of Renault’s latest strong-hybrid strategy.

Positioning in the Indian market

The next-generation Renault Duster is positioned as a crucial product for the brand in India and marks the first major reveal under Renault International Gameplan 2027. Built on the new Renault Group Modular Platform (RGMP), the SUV has been developed specifically for Indian conditions, with close to 90 percent India-specific components. The platform is engineered for durability, extreme climate operation and 5-star safety standards.

By offering turbo-petrol and strong-hybrid options, Renault aims to cover a wide spectrum of buyers – from those looking for performance-focused petrol SUVs to customers prioritising efficiency and electrified driving without range anxiety.

With the return of Duster in a new-generation avatar and the addition of a strong-hybrid powertrain, Renault is clearly signalling its intent to re-establish itself as a serious player in India’s highly competitive mid-size SUV segment.
