Being developed by Dacia, the 4×4 version of Duster is expected to be available at an affordable price point
3rd-gen Duster is available for sale in select markets such as Europe. In a recent interaction, Dacia CEO Denis Le Vot revealed that Dacia is working on an 4×4 version of the new-gen Duster. It is expected to make its global debut later this year.
Renault Duster 4×4 Hybrid setup
While Dacia is positioned as an affordable car brand, the company has introduced innovations wherever possible. The Duster 4×4 is a relevant example in that context. According to Dacia CEO, the Duster 4×4 model will have an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. The SUV will be hybrid and automatic, designed to deliver improved overall performance. Such hybrid AWD systems are known for their efficiency, simplified drivetrain and robust torque delivery.
While something new for Dacia, hybrid AWD cars are already on sale from brands like Toyota, Volvo, BMW, etc. The powertrain is managed by advanced onboard electronics that synchronizes the power output from the ICE and electric motor. The AWD will be applied automatically depending on the driving conditions.
For example, the AWD will be used when negotiating slipper conditions or at times when additional traction may be needed. A good example is Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, whose rear electric motor is always engaged when speed is below 15 miles per hour (24 km/h). Beyond that speed, the onboard electronics decide when to apply the AWD.
Talking about Duster AWD, the finer details of the powertrain have not been revealed. However, as Dacia will continue to focus on affordability, it is unlikely that any complex systems will be used. Dacia will ensure that its hybrid AWD setup is easy to produce and maintain. Dacia CEO has also revealed that the Duster AWD will be available with an LPG option. The AWD setup is also expected to be available with the Bigster SUV. Such initiatives from Dacia will ensure that AWD becomes accessible to a larger segment of users.
Duster AWD India launch
It is not certain when the Duster AWD will be available in India. Even the standard Duster’s (3rd-gen) launch in India has been postponed. Earlier, it was expected that the new Renault Duster will be introduced in India in 2025. However, this is postponed till 2026, at least. In 2025, Renault will focus on introducing some major updates to the Kiger and Triber.
Dacia will introduce the Duster AWD globally later this year. There are also plans for an electric Duster, which could be introduced in 2030-31. Affordable AWD models like Duster AWD can have significant potential for markets like India.
An AWD option with the Duster was available in India with the first-gen model. It was launched in 2014. The 1st-gen Renault Duster AWD was equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine. It generated 108 bhp / 245 Nm and was paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The upcoming 3rd-gen Duster AWD will be automatic and likely deliver a better overall performance.
