Motorbeam reports that the Renault Kwid 1.0-litre variant which is currently under development would be offered with ABS and dual airbags. The existing 800 cc Kwid has started off very strongly but its lack of adequate safety features didn’t go unnoticed.
Reacting to the customer feedback, Renault India is reported to be gearing up to offer these features in the more upmarket variants. Details of the new 1.0-litre engine are still under wraps but durability testing of the variant is said to have commenced already. The new engine is expected to be introduced sometime in mid-2016.
The 1.0-litre variant of the Kwid budget hatchback will compete with the Maruti Alto K10 and Hyundai Eon 1.0-litre. Light kerb weight and a bigger engine would make the Kwid a very peppy hatchback. The motor would be mated to a 5-MT but there could also be an optional AMT.

At the time of launch, Renault officials stated that the Kwid’s CMF-A platform is engineered to be compatible with various powertrain options and safety features. However, the French automaker’s immediate focus would be to reduce the waiting period for the popular hatchback by ramping up the production. The company is working with its vendors to increase Kwid’s production by 50% in the next 3-6 months.
