Renault Kwid AMT variant made its global debut at the 2016 Auto Expo earlier this year. Today, it was launched in India. Price starts from INR 4.27 lakh for the RxT trim, which is INR 30,000 higher than the Manual Transmission variant. Price of the RxT (o) variant starts from INR 4.4 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi.
The AMT variant of Kwid is christened Kwid Easy-R (easier). This is the same nomenclature Renault uses for their AMT models in India (eg, Duster AMT). Renault Kwid AMT will be powered by a 1.0 liter three cylinder petrol engine which delivers 68 PS and 91 Nm.
Instead of the conventional gear lever, Kwid AMT will receive a circular knob which will be placed on the center dashboard. It is this circular knob which will engage and disengage the transmission for you. As seen in the image below, the modes on offer are R, N and D. R is for Reverse, N is for Neutral, and D is for Drive. Renault Kwid AMT will rival the likes of Maruti Alto K10 AMT.
Just like the 1.0 liter Kwid variant, the AMT variant is also being offered only with the top two trims – RxT and RxT (O). Equipment levels remain on par with existing Kwid variants. Mileage claimed by Kwid AMT is 24.04 kmpl. This is higher than what Kwid MT variant claims (23.01 kmpl). During our test drive yesterday, we managed to get 16.2 kmpl from KWID AMT.
One of the most important cars Renault launched in India, Kwid comes with 98% localization level. It was the first car in India to achieve such high localization levels. This has allowed Renault India to launch the Kwid at an aggressive price.
Single handedly the Kwid has managed to bring down the sales of Maruti Alto, India’s best selling car. Ever since the Kwid was launched, Maruti’s mini car segment (which includes Alto and WagonR), have not registered sales growth.
Expect the Kwid AMT to be priced in the range of INR 4.1 to 4.3 lakh, ex-showroom. Official price will be revealed later today.
