Renault Kwid resulted in Maruti Alto, WagonR sales decline?

Maruti’s festive season domestic sales performance posted an overall Year-on-Year growth of 10.6% but the company’s long standing domination of the budget hatchback segment finally seems to be under pressure from the competition. MSIL posted positive growth in every sub-segment except the mini segment which is populated by the Maruti Alto and WagonR.

The combined sales of the Alto and WagonR for the month of November 2015 stood at 35981 units which is no doubt impressive but the fact that it represents a YoY decline of 4.7% tells a slightly different story. Both Alto and WagonR are two of the country’s top selling cars but the sales decline suggests that withstanding the pressure from Renault Kwid could get challenging in the coming months. The new small car managed to clock 7,819 units in November 2015.

The ‘Mini’ is the only segment in MSIL’s portfolio which registered a sales decline in November 2015.

With an SUV-like design, good interior space, best-in-class features, a fuel efficient engine and a mouth watering price tag, the Renault Kwid emerged as a disruptively fresh proposition in the budget end of the segment. The car which was developed primarily in India has received over 70,000 orders so far and the French automaker is working to reduce the demand supply gap.

Maruti’s small car portfolio is set to face more pressure in the coming months as the Tata Zica (Kite) is gearing up for its launch. The stylish hatchback would target the Celerio and higher variants of the WagonR.
