2020 Renault Captur facelift unveiled with new turbo petrol engine

The facelifted Renault Captur would reach India with two BS6 petrol engine choices: 1.5 H4K and 1.3 HR13

French automaker Renault has unveiled the 2020MY Captur facelift. With a range of aesthetic and mechanical improvements, the five-seater crossover has hit the Russian market as the Renault ‘Kaptur’. In Cyrillic alphabet, ‘C’ is pronounced as ‘S’ and hence it gets an exclusive spelling for Russia and other nations speaking Cyrillic-based languages.

With considerable changes in styling, Renault sells the crossover in two platforms. European markets get it from the CMF-B platform underpinning the Renault Clio while emerging markets such as Russia, India and Brazil utilise ‘M0’. In fact, the facelifted variant employs an improved M0+ architecture but the BS6-compliant Indian version (expected sometime later this year) would most likely remain based on the existing M0 platform, to go in line with Nissan-Renault products such as Duster and Kicks.

Being a facelift, there is not a major jump in the design department. A new grille pattern, added colour choices and a fresh set of five-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels are the most notable changes outside. On the inside, it receives an all-new three-spoke steering wheel, extra dashboard panelling matching exterior shade, improved material quality, 8.0-inch infotainment system (+1.0 inch) and some extra buttons in front of the gear lever (which would only mean extra features). In Russia, the 2020MY Renault Captur packs heated steering wheel, heated seats, premium Bose surround sound system, eight-colour ambient illumination, blind-spot monitoring, surround-view camera, remote engine start and more. The upcoming India-spec Captur BS6 would untick some boxes to keep prices in check. The country’s entry-level compact crossover segment (“five-seater SUVs” in Indian terms) currently witnesses tough competition from the South Korean siblings, Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta.

As in the case of every new Renault-Nissan product our market, the updated Captur will be available only in a four-cylinder petrol format. Whilst the old H4K 1.5-litre petrol engine continues to generate 105bhp and 142Nm of torque in BS6 format, higher variants would come with an all-new HR13 1.3-litre turbo petrol mill good for 154bhp and 254Nm (highest output in its class). The former will be coupled to a 5-speed manual while the latter would be available with a 6-speed manual or an 8-step CVT.

Renault and Nissan have discontinued the proven K9K 1.5-litre diesel motor ahead of the BS6 era. In the BS4 Renault Captur, it churned out almost 109bhp and 240Nm while mated to a 6-speed manual.
