While the new Duster has emerged as a strong contender, the scope for volume growth is much higher in the sub-4-meter SUV segment

Renault India recently introduced the new-gen Duster, featuring rugged styling and a comprehensive range of premium features. The SUV has been widely appreciated for its boxy silhouette, advanced tech features, strong safety credentials and peppy engine options. To build on this momentum, Renault will be launching multiple new products in India. One of these could be a sub 4m SUV, sort of like a mini Duster. Let’s check out the details.

Renault sub-4-meter SUV – What to expect?

While Renault already offers the Kiger in India, its market share in the sub-4-meter SUV segment is in single digits. By introducing a new option, Renault can strengthen its presence in this space. Renault’s new sub-compact offering is expected to have a boxier profile to achieve a clear differentiation relative to the Kiger. Users can also expect other benefits such as strong presence, roomier interiors and a more comprehensive equipment list.

This approach will allow both SUVs to target entirely different buyer groups. Similar strategies have already been executed effectively, as seen with pairs like Maruti Brezza-Fronx and Tata Nexon-Punch. Hyundai offers the Venue-Exter, whereas Kia has the Sonet-Syros combination. One can also see that even rebadged versions such as Toyota Taisor have emerged bestsellers in the entry-level SUV space.

Renault ‘mini Duster’ is expected to get attributes such as a prominent grille, sharp lighting elements, rugged front and rear bumpers and sculpted bonnet. The SUV is likely to have thick cladding, blacked-out pillars, roof rails and sporty alloy wheels. The tech features and safety kit could closely align with those introduced on the new-generation Duster.

Powertrain options, launch timeline

Powering Renault’s new sub-compact SUV could be the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, currently offered with the Kiger. Power output is 100 PS, whereas torque output is 160 Nm with the 5-speed manual transmission and 152 Nm with the x-tronic CVT unit.

Coming to the launch timeline, Renault has only hinted at the possibility of a new sub-4-meter SUV. Specific details about the current status are not available at this point in time. However, it is expected that the new SUV will be available only after the launch of the 7-seater version of the new Duster. In that case, launch could be expected around 2027-28.

In the future, more new products are expected to be introduced in the sub-4-meter SUV segment. For context, Volkswagen could introduce the Tera SUV, which is based on the same MQB A0 IN platform as the Skoda Kylaq. Similarly, Hyundai is working to bring the 2nd-gen Bayon to the Indian market.

Sub-4-meter SUVs already account for the highest volumes among all SUV segments in India. With GST benefits and a booming economy, this segment is expected to register strong growth in the future as well. This presents a good opportunity for new products like the ‘mini Duster’. In December 2025, the sub-4-meter SUV segment registered sales of 1,21,591 units, an impressive YoY gain of 36.61%.
