Renault’s flagship coupe-SUV, Renault Rafale, has been spotted on Indian roads for the first time. Hat tip to automotive enthusiast PoNsam ChaRles for sharing the spy shots. The model seen here is understood to be a one-off company import, most likely brought in for internal use by a senior official of Renault India. As of now, Renault has not indicated any plans to launch the Rafale in the Indian market.

Flagship Coupe-SUV From Renault’s Global Line-Up

The Rafale is positioned as Renault’s global halo product and made its world debut as the brand’s new flagship coupe-style SUV. Inspired by aviation—both in name and design philosophy—the Rafale showcases Renault’s latest design language and advanced hybrid technology. It is built on the CMF-CD platform, shared with models like Austral and Espace, but features unique body panels and a more dramatic coupe-SUV silhouette.

Dimensionally, the Rafale sits firmly in the D-SUV segment, measuring around 4.71 metres in length with a long 2.74-metre wheelbase. The design is a clear departure from Renault’s current India lineup, featuring arrow-shaped LED DRLs, slim LED headlamps, and a distinctive grille pattern inspired by Renault’s diamond logo. The sloping roofline, angled at 17 degrees, gives the Rafale its coupe character while also eliminating the need for a rear wiper. At the rear, Y-shaped LED tail lamps, an integrated spoiler, and a clean bumper design add to its premium appeal.

Premium Cabin With High-Tech Features

Inside, the Rafale carries forward Renault’s OpenR digital cockpit, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, along with an optional head-up display. The cabin is designed to feel premium and tech-forward, with high-quality materials, ambient lighting, and sporty seats in select trims. A standout feature is Renault’s Solarbay panoramic glass roof, which can electronically darken or lighten as per passenger preference. Despite the coupe roofline, Renault claims generous rear-seat space and a large 647-litre boot.

Under the hood, the Rafale is offered exclusively with hybrid powertrains globally. The standard version uses Renault’s self-charging E-Tech hybrid system, combining a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with electric motors for a combined output of around 200 PS. Renault also plans a more powerful plug-in hybrid variant with all-wheel drive, delivering up to 296 PS, positioning the Rafale against premium coupe-SUVs from German brands.

One-Off Company Import, Not for Sale

For now, the Rafale’s appearance in India appears to be purely for internal or executive use, rather than a precursor to a market launch. With Renault currently focusing on volume-oriented products for India and the Rafale positioned as a premium, Europe-focused model, an Indian launch seems unlikely in the near term. That said, its presence on Indian roads does offer a glimpse into Renault’s global design and technology direction—and what the brand is capable of at the top end of its portfolio.
