Renault Kayou will be powered by a new 800 cc petrol engine.

Indian auto industry is a small car market. Of the top 10 cars sold in India, 7 of them are hatchbacks which are priced under Rs 5 lakhs. The one which tops the list, is Maruti Alto. This car alone manages to register sales of about 22-23,000 units a month; which is more than what India’s third largest car maker registers.

New Renault CMF-A platform.

It is this segment which Renault India is trying to penetrate with their all-new small car, codenamed XBA as of now. To be officially unveiled on 20th May, Renault XBA small car is built on a completely new CMF-A platform, which has been designed by RNTBCI – Renault Nissan Technology Business Centre India.

The highlight of Renault XBA will be its new platform. Designed to offer more space, and at the same time a a strong structure, Renault XBA will be more like an SUV, rather than a hatchback. This will be the car’s USP, as none other car in the sub Rs 4 lakh segment offers such a design.

Other interesting talking point is the new 3 cylinder 800 cc petrol engine. Codenamed BR-8, this engine will be be the most powerful and fuel efficient in the segment. Along with manual transmission, it will also be offered with AMT gearbox. This same engine and platform will also underpin the Datsun compact SUV, which is scheduled to launch in 2016.

Renault XBA is expected to help the company transform into a volume player in the sub-continent. Spy shot : Motor Vikatan

Speaking about the car’s name, Renault could name the XBA Kayou, reveals MotorOctane. If this piece of news is true, we are not sure how Renault will pronounce ‘Kayou’ (which in Japanese means to commute). Lets wait till 20th May, to learn more about new Renault Kayou.
