Ford EcoSport bookings had already begun earlier this month while deliveries will commence from today itself. It is available in a choice of 7 color options and 38 accessories. Engine options include 1.5L petrol, 1.5L diesel and the revolutionary 1.0L EcoBoost. Of the three, only the 1.5L petrol will be offered with an optional automatic gearbox, whereas the others will only be available with manual transmission. Base price of EcoSport variants are – 1.5l Petrol – Rs 5.59 lakhs, 1.5l Diesel – Rs 6.69 lakhs, 1.0l EcoBoost – Rs 7.89 lakhs, and 1.5L Petrol Auto – Rs 8.44 lakhs. All prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi.
Petrol 1.5L will deliver 112 PS power and 140 Nm torque. The manual transmission variant will give a mileage of 15.8 kmpl, while the automatic delivers 15.6 kmpl. EcoSport Diesel 1.5L delivers 91 PS power and 204 Nm torque, with a mileage of 22.7 kmpl (most fuel efficient). EcoBoost EcoSport delivers the highest power, 125 PS and 170 Nm torque. It also delivers best in class mileage of 18.9 kmpl.
Due to its aggressive pricing, the all new Ford EcoSport will compete with Maruti Suzuki DZire, Honda Amaze and Renault Duster. It is priced to compete with premium hatchbacks and entry level sedans and SUVs in India. Though smaller in size, as compared to the Duster, the EcoSport will be loaded with features which are yet to be seen in its segment in India.
The Duster, its major rival sports two engine options. 1.6 liter petrol produced 103 bhp while its diesel engine has two power ratings of 85 bhp and 108 bhp. Where its petrol engine is concerned, the Ford EcoSport is a winner while the real competition lies in the 85 bhp diesel engined variant. The EcoSport is also cheaper than the Duster due to the fact that it is in the sub 4 meter category and takes advantage of certain price cuts which are levied on the Duster.
To be produced from the company plant in Maraimalai Nagar, Chennai, the Ford EcoSport is also being produced in company plants in Brazil and Russia while production is slated to commence in Ford plants in Thailand and Russia as well. However, it will be from the Chennai plant that exports to Europe will be effected. The long wait for launch was due to the fact that the company was ramping up supplies so as to ensure that buyers did not have to contend with long waiting periods.
