Following our earlier report of Rajasthan High Court issuing orders to the local RTO to cancel driving licenses of those found talking on mobile phones while driving or riding, the Kerala RTO has now launched a campaign against Royal Enfield motorcycles with modified exhausts.
Even as the Kerala Traffic Police have claimed that there are over 1,000 bikes sporting loud exhausts in Ernakulam, the local RTO has promised stringent action against them. Many of these bikers own Royal Enfield and have been repeatedly receiving fines for this illegal act.
The local RTO has now initiated suspension of RC – Registration Certificate for a period of 3 months during which time the bikers will not be allowed to ride their vehicles.
Following the 3 month suspension period, offenders will have to take their bikes to the RTO for inspection. Once it is ascertained that this noise emitting exhausts have been replaced with a stock unit, then only will the RC be reissued.
This new campaign will be officially launched on 1st June 2018 and suspension of RC will be under Section 53 of Motor Vehicle Act, where in it clearly states that it is illegal to modify any part of a car or a motorcycle without permission from RTO. These modified silencers cause noise of around 95 dB to 100dB which is louder than a bus horn.
These aftermarket exhaust systems are on offer through dealers across Kerala but these dealers cannot be held liable for sale of these exhaust system as they clearly indicate that these exhausts are exclusively for off road or competition use only. It is hence upto the bike owners to abide by the law or face severe punishment.
