LAPD officials are investigating the cause of this unfortunate accident.

In what was a highly unusual and unfortunate accident, Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin who portrayed Pavel Chekov was killed when his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled down the steep driveway and pinned him against the mailbox.

Jalopnik reports that, according to LAPD, Yelchin’s SUV was indeed the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee which was a part of FCA’s rollaway recall which was issued in April.

The 2014 and 2015 versions of the Grand Cherokee are a part of FCA’s rollaway recall.

The premium SUV’s unconventional gear selector has lead to numerous documented rollaway accidents. So far, 41 injuries related to this incident have been reported. It’s to be noted that the exact cause of Anton Yelchin’s accident has not been determined yet but LAPD officials will definitely pursue the rollaway issue angle also. The investigation is under progress.

When the 2014 and 2015 versions of the Grand Cherokee are slotted into park mode, they sometimes fail to stop and end up rolling according to the gradient.

The Grand Cherokee will be launched in India later this year.

FCA India has been gearing up to launch the flagship Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler off-roader later this year after numerous delays. Both models will be imported into India as a CBU. The Grand Cherokee will be rivaling the like of Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, and Mercedes GLS.
