Suzuki GSX250R being planned for India launch – Could debut at 2018 Auto Expo

Demand for the motorcycles in the 250-500 cc segment is on the rise in India. This is a segment where most manufacturers have planned to launch exciting products in the future. Some have already launched, and some are working towards launching.

One such manufacturer is Suzuki Motorcycles India. In a recent interview, Suzuki Motorcycles India revealed that they are looking at making India as a production hub for motorcycles in the 250cc to 400cc segment.

This is very exciting news for two wheeler enthusiasts in the country. Suzuki motorcycles are known for their reliability, dynamics, and engine refinement. But, due to cost constraints, their made-in-India flagship currently is a 155 cc motorcycle.

Internationally, the same brand offers an exciting range of motorcycles above the 150 cc segment. But because of cost constraints, they have not been launched in India. Now, with rise in demand for such a segment, Suzuki is forced at looking towards manufacturing these exciting and powerful machines in India. They will not only launch them here, but will also export these to countries abroad.

One such motorcycle that will be part of this project will be the GSX250R. Suzuki GSX250R is a quarter liter sportsbike. It receives several styling elements from the GSX1000R and shares its engine with the GW250. Expected to make its India debut at the 2018 Auto Expo next month, the motorcycle will be sold as a CKD.

This is a twin cylinder, liquid cooled engine offering 24.7 bhp power at 8,000 rpm and 23.3 Nm torque at 6,500 rpm. It gets 290mm twin piston calipers in the front and 240mm disc at the rear with telescopic suspension in the front and mono shock at the rear. The bike has fuel tank capacity of 15 liters and weighs a total of 178 kgs.

The company wishes to focus on the fast growing scooter and premium motorcycle space setting targets of a 10% market share in this segment. The company also aims at 1 million unit sales per year by 2020 which could be achieved in a sustainable manner with investments to the tune of INR 1,000 crores into increased production. New product portfolio with premium scooters and motorcycles, overhaul of dealer networks and new customer interface is also on the cards by the end of 2017.
