The new gen Suzuki Jimny’s retro classic styling scores high without even trying. The boxy shape not only emerges as honest and desirable but it also proves to be highly customizable as demonstrated by these two custom concepts – Suzuki Jimny Pickup Style and Jimny Surive. Both the design concepts made global debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
The Suzuki Jimny Sierra Pickup concept is based on the wide-body version of the mini SUV which is available in the international market. We think the pickup is just as cool as the original SUV if not cooler. The super compact load bay is only suitable for hauling luggage rather than accommodating your work tools but it does add a lot of character to an already strong nameplate.
In addition the load bay, the Jimny Pickup also features retro-style wooden side body panels and a body-colored grille with honeycomb meshing. Further enhancing the design study’s appeal are roll hoop, LED spot-lights, silver skid plates, black lower body cladding, white finished roof and steel wheels, and off-road tyres.
Suzuki hasn’t revealed any plans to put the Jimny Pickup into production but we would love to see it the market. The concept features the regular Jimny’s international-spec 1.5-liter petrol motor.
Second up is the equally cool Jimny Survive concept which is based on the JDM-spec Kei car version. The heavily accessorized SUV is finished in black and has generous helping of patterned steel on the exterior including the front bumper.
The Suzuki Jimny Survive ditches rear windows and adopts roof-mounted luggage rack, external roll cage, high ground clearance, custom wheels, off-road tyres, a winch, and tow hook. Being a Japanese Kei car, the Survive concept features a turbocharged three-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor producing a modest 63 bhp. However, the car certainly looks capable off the road.
Suzuki Jimny sales are a huge hit globally. In Japan, where the car is manufactured, waiting periods have crossed 6 months. This inspite of the fact that the sales are above 20k units a month. In UK, orders are now being taken for 2020, as the car is sold out for 2019. In order to meet global demand, Suzuki Jimny could enter production in India next year. Post which it could also be launched here in India, where it will replace the outdated Gypsy.
