Soaring fuel prices have led to fortification of EV and CNG portfolios. Manufacturers are pitting CNG vehicles as viable alternatives to petrol-only powertrains. Newest of the CNG vehicles is from Tata Motors. It is the Tata Altroz iCNG. Bookings have now officially opened, at Rs 21,000. Deliveries will start next month. Prices will be revealed at the time of launch.

Tata Altroz CNG comes off as a significantly more practical alternative to other premium hatchbacks with CNG like Baleno and Glanza. This is because of its dual CNG cylinder layout, liberating a massive usable boot. The car was first showcased at 2023 Auto Expo. Punch CNG variant was displayed with similar layout and is likely to launch after Altroz CNG.

Tata Altroz CNG – Double the cylinders, double the boot space?

The brand recently launched Tata Nexon EV Max Dark Edition with a bump in features. Now, we witness the same with Altroz. Till now, Indian CNG space got a single-cylinder architecture. This is a large CNG cylinder that takes up almost half of the usable boot space both vertically and horizontally.

Tata’s solution cleverly involves two smaller cylinders (30L each in capacity) that only take up boot space horizontally. Cylinders are tucked neatly beneath a removable hard plastic cover. Revealing a less awkward and more usable boot than single-cylinder architecture.

Apart from getting CNG, it will also get new features, which will be seen for the first time in Altroz. This is in the form of a sunroof and digital driver display. Yes, the Tata Altroz is finally getting a sunroof. The digital driver display is the same that we have seen in the Tiago. In the latest teaser of Altroz CNG, one can notice the presence of a sunroof as well as digital driver display. Existing variants of Altroz are going to get sunroof and digital driver display as well.

The 1.2L 3-cylinder Revotron petrol engine gets equipment to combust both petrol and CNG. This engine makes 85 bhp and 113 Nm when run on petrol and 72 bhp and 95 Nm when run on CNG. Tata’s iCNG tech is quite unique and is capable of starting with CNG fuel.

Added features with iCNG variants

The instrument cluster on Tata Altroz CNG now shows separate bars for CNG level. The display also shows which fuel the car is currently running on (petrol or CNG). A new CNG switch is found beside its engine start/stop button. Tata Altroz CNG variants get different suspension tuning to counter the added weight.

A fire extinguisher is present below the driver’s seat. Meeting CNG vehicle compliances. The model showcased at 2023 Auto Expo had 6 airbags as well. 5 star crash rating, 90-degree wide opening doors, auto headlights and wipers, 16” alloy wheels, projector headlights, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, 7” touchscreen infotainment, Harman music system, and cruise control are similar to the existing model. Altroz CNG prices could be about Rs 1 lakh more than the petrol counterpart. It will rival the Baleno CNG and Glanza CNG upon launch.
