Tata Bolt electric developed by Tata Motors UK – Video

Tata Bolt hatchback has been in the news recently in India, over a rumor which claims that the company plans to discontinue Bolt, and will only sell it to commercial fleet operators. However, around the same time, when you would think that there could be no more research happening on the Bolt platform, there is this new video which shows us the first ever Tata Bolt electric car.

Tata Bolt electric has been developed by the company’s UK R&D team. It is not the first electric car from Tata. In fact it follows a line of electric vehicles such as the Tata Vista EV, Indica EV, Iris EV and Tata Ace EV.

The new Tata Bolt EV sports an 80 kW electric motor mated to a single speed transmission while offering a driving range of close to 100 km. This electric motor is called ‘Tata e-DRIVE’ and receives a rotary gear selector instead of a conventional stick. e-DRIVE allows Tata Bolt EV to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in less than 10 seconds and reach a top speed of 135 kmph, while auto emissions are nil. Watch the car in action in the video below.

Even as rumors abound of Tata Motors discontinuing the Bolt hatchback, the company has refuted these claims. Introduced in January 2015, the Tata Bolt received initial boost but demand soon died down. Tata Motors has sold just 17,000 units of Bolt hatchback since launch.

Tata Bolt in India, is offered with a 1.2-liter Revotron petrol engine offering 84 bhp power at 5,000rpm and 140 Nm torque at 1,750-3,500 rpm. It also gets a 1.3-liter Quadrajet engine generating 73 bhp power and 190 Nm torque. Both engines get mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

We have had both variants as part of our long-term fleet, and they have been an absolute pleasure to drive them around. Read our Bolt Petrol review and Bolt Diesel review.
