Tata Bolt Sport 110 PS coming soon; new performance brand in the making

The Tata Bolt Sport 110 PS performance hatchback which is being showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo carries new ‘S’ badges instead of regular Tata logo, strongly hinting at the emergence of a new performance sub-brand. In fact, if you focus on the background of the official photo (above) that Tata sent along with the press release, you can see the “Coming Soon” wordings along with the ‘S’ logo.

The automaker has partnered with Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives to come up with performance and special vehicles. The Bolt Sport is the first project of its kind and would go on sale, perhaps later this year.
The hatchback is powered by a pumped up version of the existing 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged petrol engine which is now tuned to deliver 110 PS 5,300-5,500 rpm and 170 Nm of torque at 3,000-3,800 rpm. The hatchback is claimed to accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 12 seconds which is not really in hot hatch territory but is certainly quicker than the fast car.

To compliment the added performance, the engineers have tweaked the suspension, lowered the ride height and altered the damper settings for better handling characteristics. Other enhancements include new front and rear bumpers, 17-inch wheels, fender vents, high-flow exhaust, side skirts, etc. Interior gets black leather seats with red contrast stitching in addition to leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob.

Tata Motors could be developing the S as a performance sub-brand and include more models down the line.
