Tata Motors has just pulled off an impossible stunt with their new Curvv compact SUV. Called Act 01, this stunt is likely to be the beginning of a series. With Act 01, Tata has demonstrated the strength and performance of Curvv Hyperion (Turbo GDI) 6-speed Manual powertrain variant by pulling three trucks with a total combined weight of 42,000 kg!

Taking a glimpse from the past, Tata Motors is no stranger to demonstrate the strength of their vehicles. We have seen a Tata Hexa pulling a Boeing 737-800 airplane. One quick Google search reveals that Boeing 737-800 has an operating empty weight of 41,140 kg. So, a tough SUV built on a heavy-duty ladder frame chassis powered by a 2.2L Diesel engine is already impressive.

Now, Tata is demonstrating chassis strength and integrity of Curvv by pulling 42,000 kg. This might be even more impressive than Hexa’s already-impressive feat considering this particular Curvv unit is underpinned by a mainstream monocoque chassis and is powered by a 1.2L Petrol engine, not known for torquey pulling power.

In the video posted by Tata Motors on their social media handles, we can see a Curvv Hyperion (Turbo GDI) Manual variant pulling three trucks that weigh a total of 42,000 kg. Basically, more than what the Hexa pulled. This particular Tata Curvv is seen with a custom rear hook where the heavy chains are connected.

It is obvious that this heavy duty hook is directly connected to Curvv’s platform (skateboard) and is not part of standard equipment. All three trucks are connected with chains and are hooked on to this particular Curvv.

What does this stunt achieve?

With a stunt like this, Tata Motors is demonstrating the strength and structural integrity of their vehicle’s underpinnings. This is a shiny example of the engineering aspects where FOS (Factor Of Safety) is well above 1. For FOS to be equal to 1, this Curvv had to perform as advertised after towing its rated capacity, which is not likely to be more than 2,000 kg.

Also, this stunt demonstrates the performance of Tata’s new Hyperion motor. Usually, petrol engines are not considered for stunts like this as Diesel bears the obvious torque and pulling power advantage. This 1.2L Hyperion GDI engine is capable of generating 125 PS of peak power and 225 Nm of peak torque and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox in this stunt.

Tata’s Act 01 with Tata Curvv is likely to generate a lot of positive affiliations with buyers towards the brand. Demonstrating its strength and engineering prowess, Curvv aims to increase its sales potential against established rivals from rival brands like Hyundai, Kia and more.
