Tata’s step into premium SUV segment is still underway but new information has come to light. Codenamed Q501 and Q502, the Sport Utility Vehicles are said to be powered by Fiat MultiJet diesel engines of 2.0 litre displacement.

The upcoming premium SUVs Q501 and Q502 from Tata Motors are expected to launch in 2017. Q501 is a 5-seater and Q502 a 7-seater. Both cars are underpinned by extensively modified Land Rover Freelander platform.

As per the report, Tata Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) are working out a way to locally develop the engine that is going to drive the two Indian SUVs and also the upcoming new C-segment compact SUV from Jeep (codenamed 554). The last one is also expected to launch in 2017.

This is a mutually beneficial deal, as FCA will get increased economies of scale as the engine will be locally manufactured at Tata-FCA joint venture manufacturing plant at Ranjangaon near Pune, and Tata will get its hands on a new-generation turbo diesel engine suitable for a variety of future products.
This engine is also seen as the linchpin to continued product development and manufacturing partnership between the India’s largest automobile company (by revenues) and the Italian-American firm, who ended their marketing tie-up around two years ago.
