The Tata Harrier contributed to these sales taking the lead over the Mahindra XUV500 and Jeep Compass. It is the first vehicle from Tata Motors to be positioned on the Impact Design 2.0 styling philosophy add is also based on the OMEGA (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced) architecture from the Land Rover D8.

It gets its power via a 2.0 liter Kryotec, 4 cylinder diesel engine with MultiJet turbo from FCA. The engine is capable of 140 PS power and 320 Nm torque mated to a 6 speed manual transmission. The company also plans to introduce a Hyundai sourced 6 speed torque converter automatic for the Harrier, while a 7 seater version is also in the making.

As competition heats up, Mahindra has announced a more affordable XUV500 W3 variant. This W3 variant is now priced from Rs.12.28 lakhs making it cheaper than the W5 trim which was an entry level variant till date priced from Rs.12.85 lakhs. This makes the entry price of XUV500 cheaper than the Harrier. Will this help increase sales of XUV500? Only time will tell.

To scale up competition in this segment, Jeep India is set to bring in the Compass Trailhawk which will go on sale from July 2019 at a price of about Rs.25 lakhs. This new Trailhawk edition will sport several exterior and interior updates with more off-road capabilities. It will get higher ground clearance at 205mm, improved approach and departure angle along with water wading facilities and Rock Mode. It will be powered by the same 2.0 liter diesel engine offering 170 PS power and 350 Nm torque mated to a 9 speed automatic transmission sending power to all four wheels.
