Tata Motors starts testing new compact sedan with sportback stance
To compete with entry level cars, like the Maruti Celerio, and Hyundai i10, Tata Motors is working on a new car. This is currently codenamed as Tata Kite. The hatchback variant was already spied earlier this year, but now, a new sedan variant has also been spotted, confirming that there will be two cars on the Kite platform.
As you can see from the spy shots, Tata has designed the Kite sedan in a sportback style, very much like the GT variants from BMW. This new styling is expected to be the USP of the Kite sedan.
Based on the refined Indica platform, Kite hatchback will be placed between Nano and Indica, while the Kite sedan is expected to replace the Indigo compact sedan. Refinement to the platform will bring much better handling, driving dynamics and fuel efficiency to the Kite twins.
As far as engine options are concerned, it is expected to be offered in both, petrol and diesel options. Petrol option will be in the form of 1.2l Revotron, while the diesel will be in the form of new 3 cylinder 1.05l diesel engine. Both these options are expected to deliver less power and torque as compared to Zest and Bolt.
Expected to be launched in 2015, the Kite twins will be produced at Tata’s plant in Sanand in Gujarat, with production set at 150,000 units annually. Sanand plant has an installed capacity of 240,000 units, but as the plant can only produce Nano, it has remained under-utilised. The launch of new Kite cars will help Tata use the Sanand facility to true potential.
Price of Kite hatchback is expected to be in the Rs 3.2 lakh range, while that of Kite sedan is expected to be in the Rs 4 lakh range.
