Tata Motors global sales decline for Dec 2018 – 1 lakh units sold

This means that Tata’s global wholesale numbers have registered a decline of 13.9 percent from December 2017, when the company posted sales of 116,677 units. For the same period last year, the company had posted 23 percent sales growth.

Tata Motors’ commercial vehicles and Tata Daewoo range global wholesales for the month are reported at 40,653 units, down 14 percent from Dec ’17 when the company sold 47,182 units. That has a record growth of 53 percent. Of this, Tata Motors’ Commercial Vehicles (CV) domestic retail sales accounted for 36,180 units, down 11 percent from 40,447 units sold in December 2017.

Passenger vehicles global wholesales accounted for 59,898 units, down 14 percent from 69,495 units sold in December 2017. Last year the company had reported 8 percent growth in the passenger vehicle segment. Of this, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (PV) domestic sales (retail) accounted for 14,260 units sold at 1 percent growth over 14,180 units sold in Dec ’17.

Global wholesales for Jaguar Land Rover are reported at 45,474 vehicles (*JLR number for December 2018 includes CJLR volumes of 5007 units). For the month, Jaguar wholesales are reported at 14,088 units, and Land Rover at 31,386 units. Global wholesales for Jaguar Land Rover are down 17.5 percent from 55,066 units reported sold in Dec ’17. CJLR volumes are down 51 percent from 10,269 units reported in Dec ’17.

Jaguar wholesales are down 16.3 percent from 16,826 vehicles, and Land Rover wholesales are down 18 percent from 38,240 vehicles. Retail sales for the month are reported at 52,160 units, down 6.4 percent from Dec ’17. Jaguar retail sales are up 7.2 percent at 16,165 units sold and Land Rover reports retails sales at 35,995 units, down 11.4 percent from Dec ’17.

Year 2019 is not off to a great start for Tata’s British brand, as JLR has already announced axing of about 4,500 jobs. This is largely being done due to decline in sales.

Tata Motors on the other hand, is posting impressive growth. In 2018, Tata was the car maker which posted highest growth rate of over 26%. Their sales crossed the 2 lakh mark, and stood at 2,16,786 units, which makes them the 4th largest car maker in India for 2018.

For 2019, the company has plans set with atleast three launches – Tata Harrier 5 seater, Tata Harrier 7 seater and Tata 45X hatchback. These three cars will help Tata continue its growth pattern in India for 2019.
