51 year old Karl Slym joined Tata Motors in October 2012, and was providing leadership to the company through a challenging market environment. The company shares in the grief of Karl Slym’s wife and family at their irreparable loss”.
Cyrus Mistry, Chairman, Tata Motors said, “I am deeply saddened to inform you about the untimely and tragic demise of our company’s Managing Director, Karl Slym. Karl was visiting Bangkok for a meeting of the Board of Directors of Tata Motors Thailand Ltd., and passed away earlier today.
Karl joined us in October 2012, and was a valued colleague who was providing strong leadership at a challenging time for the Indian auto industry. In this hour of grief, our thoughts are with Karl’s wife and family.”
An alumnus of Standford University and a Sloan Fellow, Mr. Slym took over as Tata Motors MD back in October 2012. Mr. Slym lead all operations of Tata Motors in India and international markets including South Korea, Thailand, Spain, Indonesia, South Africa.
Under the leadership of Karl, Tata Motors were getting ready to launch two new products for India, Falcon 4 and Falcon 5, on the eve of 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. No reason of his demise was mentioned in the press release.
UPDATE: DNA India reports that he fell from the 22nd floor Shangri-La five star hotel in Bangkok. He fell from the same room in which he had checked in with his wife. He was scheduled to check-out today. A suicide note has been found from Karl Slym’s room. Police are investigating.
