Tata posts higher sales growth than auto industry – Thanks to Nexon, Tiago

Tata Motors has announced a 20% increase in sales during September 2018. Sales during the past month stood at 64,520 units, up 20% as compared to 53,964 units in September last year.

Cumulative domestic sales performance during the April-September 2018 period also witnessed strong growth of 40%. Sales during this period stood at 3,39,186 units as compared to 2,42,787 units during the same period of the previous year.

Nexon is one of the best-selling compact SUV in India.

Taking only domestic passenger car sales into account in September 2018, it increased 7% and stood at 18,429 units as compared to 17,286 units sold in the same month of the previous year. Cumulative sales of passenger vehicles in domestic markets during April to September grew by 31% to 1,06,865 units as compared to just 81,417 units sold during the past period of the last fiscal.

This makes Tata Motors sales growth for the month of Sep 2018 is higher than any of the top 5 car makers in India. Maruti posted a 0.7% growth, Hyundai posted 4.5% decline, Honda declined by 19%, Mahindra declined by 16%, Ford declined by 6.4%, etc. This higher sales growth of Tata indicates that their new generation cars like Nexon, Tiago, Tigor are striking a chord with the new car buyers in the country.

Commercial vehicle sales in domestic markets also increased 26% to 46,169 units as compared to 36,678 units sold in September 2017. M&HCV truck segment saw a 32% increase in sales from 12,259 units to 16,239 units while the I&LCV truck segment saw growth of 25% from 4,449 units in September 2017 to 5,465 units in the past month. SCV Cargo and Pick up segment also recorded growth of 27% with 19,846 units sold as compared to 15,607 units sold in the last year.

Exports of passenger and commercial vehicles also surged by 35% with 5,250 units exported in the past month as compared to 3,887 units exported in September 2017. Commercial vehicle exports showed increased demand from Bangladesh and by festive buying in Nepal. However, taking cumulative sales from exports into account this fiscal, a dip of 3% was reported with 24,314 units exported as compared to 25,035 units exported in the past year.

Mayank Pareek, President, PV Business, Tata Motors has stated that company cars are being developed based on customer feedback. There is added impetus being given to quality and design which has led to increased sales. It was the company’s Tiago hatchback along with the recently introduced Tiago NRG that received overwhelming response. Tiago sales have crossed 300 units per day while the Nexon has also seen increased sales along with the Hexa, Nexon AMT and Nexon KRAZ limited edition.
