With the launch of Red Dark Editions for Harrier and Safari, we might witness a jump in Tata Motors sales in mid-size SUV segment
There is an interesting battle going on between Tata Motors and Hyundai; to occupy the second place in car sales. Occasionally, Tata Motors does snatch the second spot from under Hyundai, but has not managed to hold on to it for longer.
In the month of March 2023, Tata Motors’ sales stood at 44,044 units, while Hyundai zoomed past with a lead of around 6K units at 50,600 units. That said, there are multiple new car launches planned by Tata that will help generate more sales in the coming months.

With 44,044 units sold in March 2023, Tata Motors car sales are largely driven by Nexon and Punch. Both these vehicles have been constantly generating good volumes for the brand.
When compared to 42,293 units Tata sold in March 2022, a 4.14% YoY growth was registered. Volume growth for this feat accounted for 1,751 units YoY. The winning streak continued when MoM analysis was done too. As opposed to 42,865 units sold in February 2023, Tata Motors witnessed a 2.75% MoM growth.
Volume growth MoM was 1,179 units. Upcoming vehicles by Tata Motors include Curvv to take on the heavily crowded compact SUV space. This segment is currently dominated by Hyundai Creta. Other new car launches from Tata include facelifted Nexon, Harrier and Safari. Punch and Altroz are set to get CNG powertrains.
In Q1 2023, Tata sold a total of 1,34,899 units. This is a commendable feat for a homegrown brand. In comparison they had sold 1,23,055 units in Q1 2022. In the process, 9.62% YoY growth was observed with a volume growth accounting for 11,844 units YoY. At the same time, the 1,34,899 units sold in Q1 2023 was greater than 1,31,305 units sold in Q4 2022. As opposed to the previous quarter, we have a 2.74% growth, leading to 3,594 units gained in volume QoQ.
Tata Motors Total Domestic Sales, including CVs
Total sales registered by Tata Motors in March 2023 were at over 89k. This was a 3% YoY growth. CV domestic sales stood at 45k units, growing 2% YoY. CV Exports stood at 1,516 units – registering a decline of 42% YoY.
