Tata Motors has expanded its long term alliance with Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives by announcing a 50:50 joint venture to develop special performance vehicles. Called as JT Special Vehicles Ltd., the new entity will focus on developing high performance and visually enhanced variants of Tata’s current series of passenger car models.
Speaking about the JV, Guenter Butschek, CEO & MD, Tata Motors, stated that the new partnership will add more exciting performance variants to the company’s portfolio. It’s to be noted that Jayem has been actively involved in testing and validating Tata Motors products in addition to coming up with occasional high performance prototypes which never hit the market.
JT Special Vehicles is currently exploring to set up a dedicated assembly line for the high performance products in Coimbatore. The new facility will incorporate design, precision machining, assembly, and testing infrastructure.
The company hasn’t specified a time frame for the first high performance product, nor did it provide a hint on which model it will be based. We expect Tata and Jayem to begin the new endeavor with the Tiago hatchback, the turnaround specialist. (Back in 2015, the team had showcased Tata Bolt Sport.)
In addition to obvious visual add-ons like aggressive bumpers, skirts, spoilers and bigger alloy wheels, we can expect lower suspension system, tweaked steering system and beefed up braking. The 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged petrol engine in a high state of tune is expected to be the powertrain of choice.
With the new JV, Tata Motors is aiming to enhance the aspirational appeal of its products.
