Tata Nano diesel to be launched with world’s smallest diesel engine
Since the launch of Tata Nano – the world’s cheapest car, rumors have been doing rounds about a more efficient diesel variant of Nano. Tata Motors are working on launching a Nano diesel diesel variant, but are not sure when they will be able to launch it in the market. Tata Motors have not set themselves a deadline for launching Nano diesel, they want to take their time and develop a perfect small diesel car.
Tata Motors spokesperson associated with Nano diesel project said, “It’s far-off. There is no launch time frame for the Nano diesel as of yet. Eventually a diesel version of the Nano will come. The company is developing an 800cc twin cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine The company also plans to use the engine for its light commercial vehicles (LCVs). The engine will be completely developed in India.”
The launch of Nano diesel will be a big boost for Tata Motors, especially in India where car buyers are shifting their preference to diesel powered cars. Talking more about the new small diesel engine, Tata spokesperson said, “This is for the first time that we are developing a turbo-charged diesel engine in India from scratch. Earlier we used to bring the engine from our overseas operation and modify them here.”
Talking about diesel Nano, Mr Nikhil Deshpande, Analyst, Pinc Research, says, “It will be a big boost for the Nano. But the company needs to ensure that it should be a very fuel efficient engine. A diesel version of the car was expected from the company right from the outset, but its success will depend a lot on the quality of the engine and how it is tuned. Normally, the diesel engines are bulky while the Nano is a lighter car. So, it is likely to have more vibration than a petrol version of the car and the company needs to address all these concerns.”
