Tata Nexon 5 star safety rating announcement results in added sales

On 7th Dec 2018, Tata Motors proudly announced that Nexon has become the first ever made in India car to have received a 5 star Global NCAP safety rating. The achievement was huge, even rivals took notice and congratulated. This was a big deal, as finally there was a manufacturer who did not intend to sell cars on the USP of being high on fuel efficiency alone.

And this announcement has worked well, as the success has resonated in the sales numbers as well. The months since the announcement was made by Tata, Nexon sales have constantly been above the 5k mark. Both Jan and Feb 2019 sales stood at over 5,000 units. Prior to this, Nexon sales never crossed the 5k mark in a single month.

On the eve of our 70th Republic Day in January this year, Tata Motors released an ad, which asked people who are buying cars, to ask the right question. For years, many buyers only believed in asking one question before buying a car – Kitna deti hain? Tata Motors instead wants car buyers to ask ‘Kitni safe hain’? Yes, this ad took a dig at competition, but it did resonate with the sentiment of car buyers. Nexon sales are up by about 15-20% post the announcement of its 5 star safety rating.

Tata Nexon safety crash test video has been viewed for over 3.5 million times across various social media platforms. More and more buyers are posting praises about the build quality on social media, which has created a positive sentiment for the brand Nexon.

Tata Nexon is touted as India’s safest car and has become the first car to score 5 star rating from Global NCAP for adult protection and 3 star rating for child occupant protection. It has achieved this by scoring 16.06 points out of 17, the highest as yet for any Indian made car. It gets extra safety features such as seat belt reminder for driver and passenger as standard, offered across all variants, extra bolstering of structure to allow it to pass the more stringent UN95 side impact protection standard. With the Tata Nexon, the company has shown to the world that to achieve a 5 star rating you can ‘Make in India’.

As per ARAI rating, the Tata Nexon offers mileage of 17 kmpl on its petrol engine going up to 21 kmpl for its diesel engine. Its engine lineup includes a 1.2 liter turbocharged petrol engine offering 110 PS power and 170 Nm torque and a 1.5 liter diesel engine capable of 110 PS power and 260 Nm torque. Both engines get mated to a 6 speed manual or 6 speed AMT. Tata Nexon is the only compact SUV to be offered with optional AMT, both on its petrol and diesel engine options while it also gets three driving modes of Eco, City and Sport.
