The fully camouflaged pre-production test mule of the Tata Nexon compact crossover is slowly becoming a common sight on the highways near Pune. We bumped into one of the prototypes recently and as you can see, it still continues to use make-shift headlamps and taillights.
The sub-4 metre SUV was showcased it its production avatar at the Auto Expo 2016 in January but the development work is still on. The Maruti Vitara rival shares its platform with the Zest/Bolt twins. While the petrol engine would be the 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged unit, the diesel engine is likely to be an all-new 1.5-litre four-cylinder RevoTorq unit. Both manual transmission and AMT (spied earlier) will be on offer.
The Tata Nexon follows the brand’s new Impact design philosophy which retains the recognizable silhouette with rounded off edges. The finer elements of the design, however, are fresh. Tata’s design firms from across the world have contributed to the final styling of the Nexon.
We expect the fully loaded variants to offer standard front airbags, ABS with EBD, a touchscreen Harman infotainment system, projector headlamps, alloy wheels, foglights, automatic climate control, powered ORVMs and so on. The newly patented start-stop system could also find its way onboard.

In addition to the Maruti Vitara, the Nexon will also pick up a fight with the Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300 and NuvoSport.
