Codename Pelican, Tata Motors’ plan to change the fate of Nano’s platform that involved extreme handwork was expected to host petrol as well as diesel engines. According to Zigwheels, the company has no plans to plonk a diesel motor into the small car.The 3-cylinder 800 cc diesel motor with Bosch EFI is said to be high on NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels to be suitable for a passenger car, it is limited to being a Tata Ace material. The only engine Tata Pelican will receive is the all-new 1.0 litre petrol unit which will debut in the said car.
Tata Pelican is based on X302 platform, which is an upgraded version of Nano’s underpinnings. It will be slightly bigger than and will be positioned above Nano. So, since Tata Nano is sold in price range of Rs. 2.04 lakhs to Rs. 2.43 lakhs (ex-showroom New Delhi), Pelican can be expected to retail at starting price of around Rs. 2.50 lakhs. Slated to launch towards the end of 2016, Tata Pelican will have Maruti Alto in its cross hairs.
