Tata Punch Facelift First Drive Review – New Hoot In Town!

In 2021, Tata Motors launched a Sub 4m SUV that quickly became one of its most important models ever launched, bringing in volumes and accolades. We’re talking about the Punch SUV and its journey in the country as it is one of India’s most popular cars. Punch has witnessed strong acceptance across city and small-town buyers helping it achieve a massive sales milestone in 2024, when it became India’s highest-selling car (irrespective of genres).

A vehicle of this calibre should be kept updated and fresh and that is exactly what Tata has done in 2026. After receiving a couple of features bump, Punch is building on its success with its first-ever facelift. Tata could have just given Punch facelift a fresh look and call it a day. But Tata has gone out of its limb to make Punch more desirable than it ever was by offering it new features, meaningful updates and an all-new engine. We drove it in Pune and here’s what we think about 2026 Tata Punch facelift.

Colour options include Cyantafic, Caramel, Coorg Clouds and Bengal Rouge. Where design is concerned, 2026 Punch facelift is an evolution, rather than being an evolution. Which is a good thing as Punch was preferred for its dominating presence, within its segment. While the current trends is to slap connected DRLs, Tata made a conscious choice not to do so. This makes Punch facelift stand out with its eyebrow-like LED DRLs.

LED headlights are shared with Punch EV. Cornering fog lights are present too, a feature most vehicles marketed as premium mid-size SUVs are currently lacking. Front bumper has been revised and it now gets a bull-bar shaped faux silver skid plate. Bonnet is of clamshell type and has a flat-ish appearance along with power bulges. The square module on the front bumper might look like Tata gave Punch facelift ADAS suite, but that is not the case.

There is no radar there and that square element is currently aesthetic and might become functional when Punch gets ADAS in an update, depending on the demand. There’s even cameras on front bumper and ORVMs as Punch facelift comes with 360-degree cameras. Shark-fin antenna, single-pane sunroof and roof rails are present too. On the sides, Punch facelift has been bestowed with a new set of 16-inch alloy wheels while the rest of its side profile is carried over as is.

Tyres are 195-section with 60 profile from Goodyear. Punch facelift continues with rear drum brakes, even though i-Turbo variants now bring a higher performance ceiling than before. At the rear, new Punch gets a big makeover. Standout feature here is the new connected LED tail-lamp setup, which looks really good and adds a modern touch. You also get a new roof spoiler at the top, giving rear a sporty stance.

Updated Interiors

On the inside, 2026 Tata Punch facelift looks noticeably a more modern car than its predecessor. That is because there is an attempt to modernise Punch’s interior which has been executed well. Contributing to this effect is a new 2-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo in the middle and Tata’s latest touch and toggle type steering-mounted controls.

Behind this steering is a new 7-inch TFT instrument cluster which is flanked by digital LCD gauges for tachometer, fuel level and engine temperature levels. Most of the informatics are integrated into its TFT cluster. Some of the dashboard materials are new, lending this vehicle a modern appeal. Tata has given Punch facelift the same touch-and-toggle type climate control panel, shared with its more premium vehicles like Nexon, Curvv, Harrier and Safari, among others.

Infotainment screen is still the same 10.2-inch unit which comes equipped with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This screen has great resolution and response while packing a well thought-out and intuitive UI. It also doubles up as a monitor for 360-degree camera feed and blindspot assist. An 8-speaker audio system is present in Punch with acceptable audio quality for its price and segment.

The entire centre console is new with Punch facelift which now gets a centre sliding armrest and a storage box beneath it. A couple of cup holders, a wireless charging pad, two Type-C USB charging ports (one of them being a 65W fast charger) can also be seen at this centre console area. Front and rear seats get fabric upholstery and an extended under-thigh support for the first time too, which adds a new layer of comfort.

Door pads get a dedicated compartment for an umbrella along with large bottle holders. Driver window is the only one to get an auto up/down function. Driver’s seat is height adjustable and steering wheel lacks telescopic adjustment. Depending on the variants, Tata provides auto headlights and rain-sensing wipers too. AMT variants get paddle shifters too, but CNG variants miss out on cruise control feature.

Sunroof is a single-pane unit and lets in light and sun if you’re into that sort of thing in hot and humid Indian conditions. TPMS is on offer too, but it does not show precise readings and only shows whether the pressure is acceptable or needs refilling. IRVM is auto-dimming with Punch facelift, which is one of its strengths. For rear occupants, Tata Motors is offering ac vents and 15W USB Type-C charging ports to charge their electronics.

There are two adjustable headrests and a centre armrest. Room for rear occupants is decent with good knee-room, foot-room and head-room. Window area are large and does not make occupants feel claustrophobic. It is not all good news here as Tata has done some cost cutting by omitting occupant detection sensors which asks for seatbelt to be strapped in at all times even if there is no one at the rear or trigger seatbelt warning beeps. Boot space is 366L with Petrol and 210L with CNG variants.

Powertrains and Dynamics

Most notable update to 2026 Tata Punch facelift is in its engine department. We now get a 1.2L Turbo Petrol engine with Punch for the first time. When we first saw i-Turbo badge on Punch, 108 PS and 140 Nm were the numbers that swept through our mind, similar to Altroz i-Turbo from the past. However, that’s not the case as Punch gets 120 PS and 170 Nm, which Altroz Racer used to get and Nexon currently gets.

Even Curvv’s lower variants get the exact same numbers. A combination of smaller footprint and lower weight with these performance metrics makes Punch i-Turbo an absolute hoot. Sadly, there is no automatic variant with Punch i-Turbo as Tata is only giving it a 6-speed manual gearbox. Other engine options include Revotron NA Petrol engine option and a i-CNG option, same as before.

It has to be noted that i-CNG now gets an AMT gearbox option, which was not on offer before. At the media drive in Pune, we drove i-Turbo MT and i-CNG AMT. Both powertrains need work with their engine mounts as there were quite a bit vibey, which could be felt on the inside. Overall experience with 2026 Punch facelift was quite crude, harsh and vibey, which could have worked upon. However, these are acceptable at the price point Punch facelift is offered at.

Where performance is concerned, i-Turbo steals the show with its vigour and punch. It is an absolute hoot. When you dump its clutch, you can easily do a wheel spin with Punch i-Turbo in 1st gear, 2nd gear and even in 3rd gear, which is just bonkers. The 6-speed manual gearbox is a bit notchy to operate, especially when shifting from 1st to 2nd gears. Also, clutch pedal feel needs some time to feel familiar as its bite point is slightly unusual.

Tata might launch a DCA gearbox variant of Punch i-Turbo in the future, if enough buyers ask for it. i-CNG AMT variant, on the other hand, is a different story. AMT gearbox is consistently slow to shift and feels jarring in traffic conditions. This is typical of AMT gearbox and Tata hasn’t done anything to cough up better response from this setup. For relaxed drivers aimed to eke out maximum mileage (fuel efficiency), this AMT gearbox should not be a problem.

Performance is noticeably dull in CNG mode, which is expected. No surprises there. Paddle shifters with this level of performance is redundant in our opinion, but it might prove to be a good workaround to bypass the jarring AMT experience. We just wished Tata had worked on insulating engine compartment from the cabin better than it is now. Where dynamics are concerned, 2026 Punch facelift feels more or less the same as it did before.

Which is not a bad thing as it always had a great balance between drivability and ride quality for Indian road conditions. Bump absorption is excellent and the amount of confidence it inspires in drivers on Indian road conditions is still unmatched. With the new i-Turbo engine, one can even hustle Punch and it will not put up any resistance. On-road dynamics are good and even the braking is quite acceptable for its pricing. Tata even organised a curated off-road course in Pune to test Punch’s off-roading prowess and the things this SUV can pull off is astonishing.

Should You Buy One?

Summing things up, the new 2026 Punch facelift feels more complete than ever. The addition of the 1.2L i-Turbo engine brings the performance it was missing earlier, while its compact size, comfortable ride quality and confident road manners make it well suited for everyday city driving as well as occasional highway runs.

Availability of AMT with Punch CNG adds another layer of practicality, keeping running costs in check and making daily commutes far easier in heavy traffic. Areas of improvement is overall NVH inside the cabin and better tuning of AMT gearbox with CNG powertrain. While we’re at it, we also wish Tata had given Punch facelift ventilated seats and an automatic gearbox with the new i-Turbo engine.

With a proven 5-star safety rating backing it up, Punch facelift continues to be a sensible, well-rounded choice. With all these updates, Punch is now a much stronger product than it ever was and it is now a much better overall package. If you’re in the market to buy a small SUV for the city with a dash of fun and performance, Punch facelift (particularly, the i-Turbo) should be at the top of your wish list.
