Tata Motors just launched the Punch facelift, which has emerged as one of India’s best-selling Sub 4m SUVs and the best-selling mini SUV. The potential Punch has in terms of sales is praise-worthy and CY2024’s sales achievement as India’s best-selling car (of any genre) is a testament to that.
In an attempt to boost sales and widen its audience base, Tata just launched a Turbo Petrol option for the first time with Punch, making it a hoot in its segment. What if there was a Diesel engine option as well, to really push the sales envelope ahead? Here’s what Chief Product Officer of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Mohan Savarkar, has to say about it.
Tata Punch Diesel Engine
After the launch of Punch i-Turbo, only one question now remains. Is there wiggle room in Tata’s portfolio for a Punch Diesel? Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles elaborated that Punch i-Turbo was a step in the right direction and future powertrain launches (Diesel, in this case), will be guided by consumer demand and market feedback.

Savarkar explained how Punch started off with a normal Petrol engine and gearbox options. Tata’s multi-powertrain approach led the way to i-CNG and then to Punch EV. We recently witnessed the launch of Punch i-Turbo and it could get a DCA gearbox option too. He further explained that if market demands, there’s no reason why Tata shouldn’t look into Punch Diesel.
Punch shares its ALFA architecture as Altroz, which is India’s only Diesel hatchback. So, accommodating the 1.5L Revotorq engine in Punch should not be a big challenge. What is a big challenge, is demand for Diesel engines in B SUV segment which currently favours Petrol and CNG powertrains.
Even the Nexon’s Diesel engine share is around 16% of its total sales, while Altroz’s is around 8%. With Punch Diesel, Tata Motors could double down on the SUV tag Punch carries. Even in the past, offerings like Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Honda WR-V and Hyundai i20 Active have had a Diesel engine. So, the idea is not foreign.

Current powertrains
Where powertrains are concerned, Tata Punch never had something attractive that enthusiasts would crave for. Even the Tiago had a high-performance JTP version once. It just had a 1.2L 3-cyl NA Petrol and a CNG version of the same. With 2026 Punch facelift, Tata upped the game with a 120 PS Turbo Petrol engine and a 6-speed manual gearbox.
This shows how Tata Motors keeps doors open where opportunities are concerned and its continual evolution in the market based on customer feedback. Based on customer feedback, Tata might launch a DCA gearbox option with Punch i-Turbo.
