The premium crossovers are reported to borrow certain structural components from Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Tata Motors is working on a pair of flagship SUVs to sit above the upcoming Hexa. Codenamed Tata Q501, the premium crossover is expected to be a 5-seat vehicle. There would be a 7-seat derivative (codenamed Q502) as well.

The flagship duo were previously expected to be ready sometime in 2017 but a recent report by Autocar India suggests that launch is slated for 2018. The publication also reiterates that the Q501 and 502 would derive some structural elements like the floor pan from the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Despite sharing platform components with a Land Rover, the upcoming Tata premium crossovers are said to have a completely different appeal, appearance and feel. To keep the costs at bay, Tata Motors is expected to refrain from using the tech-laden JLR Ingenium family of engines. Instead, the automaker is most likely to go with the 2.0-litre Fiat MultiJet II diesel engine which outputs 170 PS. Both 6-speed MT and AT would be on offer along with 4×2 and 4×4 configurations.

Keeping up with their premium positioning, the Tata Q501 and Q502 would be packed with several safety features, driver assistance systems and latest connectivity features. Competition would come from the like of Mahindra XUV500 in the lower end of the spectrum and Toyota Fortuner at the higher end.
