Tata Nexon SUV helps company grow 28% – Beat Honda in Aug 2018 sales

Tata Motors has posted a staggering growth of 28% in the month of August 2018. This growth comes at a time when major car makers have posted a decline, or a subdued growth – due to floods in many parts of the country in the month of August 2018.

Tata Motors passenger cars registered sales of 18,420 units last month, as compared to 14,340 units sold in August 2017. This is an increase of 28%. This makes Tata Motors India’s 4th largest automaker behind Maruti Suzuki (158,189 units), Hyundai (35,895 units), Mahindra (19,758 units). It has replaced Honda Cars India, which sold 17,020 cars last month.

Thanks to Nexon, Tata’s passenger UV segment registered a staggering growth of 93% while their hatchback and sedan sales grew by 9%. Cumulative sales of PV in the domestic market for the fiscal (April-August 2018) grew by 38%, at 88,436 units compared to 64,131 units for the same period, last fiscal.

Mr. Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors Ltd. said, “The demand for our new generation vehicles has helped us maintain this consistent month on month growth. We will continue to strive towards driving volumes and increasing our market share as part of our on-going turnaround journey.”

In the commercial vehicle segment Tata sold 39,859 units as against 31,566 units in Aug 2017 – thereby registering a growth of 26%. Cumulative sales of CVs for this fiscal (Apr – Aug 2018) have grown to 186,318 units from 124,691 units – a growth of 49%.

Overall sales of Tata Motors stood at 58,262 units for Aug 2018 as compared to 45,906 for Aug 2017. YTD fiscal sales stand at 274,666 units as compared to 188,822 units in the same period last year. This is a growth of 45%.

To increase their growth further, Tata Motors has laid out extensive plans to launch new cars and invest more in increasing dealership network. Their two new platforms – OMEGA and AMP will start delivering cars starting next year. The first car will be Land Rover based Harrier SUV, then the H7X SUV and then the 45X hatchback.

The Harrier will rival Hyundai Creta, upcoming Maruti Vitara, etc. H7X will be a Toyota Fortuner rival, 45X will compete with Maruti Baleno, Hyundai i20. After this, there will be a Tata sedan launch, which will rival Maruti Ciaz, Hyundai Verna. A total of 12 new cars will be launched by 2022, which will see Tata Motors emerge one of the top 3 car maker in India.
