Car sales in Feb 2023 stood at 3,34,245 units up 10.4 percent from 3,02,729 units sold in Feb 2022. It was however a MoM de-growth of 3.3 percent from 3,45,805 units sold in Jan 2022. While Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai claimed the top 2 spots, Tata Motors was at No. 3 with 42,865 units sold during the past month, up 7.2 percent when compared to 39,980 units sold in Feb 2022. It was a MoM de-growth of 10.7 percent as against 47,990 units sold in Jan 2023.

Tata Motors currently commands a 12.8 percent market share, down 0.4 percent when compared to 13.2 percent held in Feb 2022. The company is currently offering hefty discounts across range for the month of March 2023 which is sure to boost sales in the month ahead.

Tata Nexon topped sales charts in Feb 2023. Sales were at 13,914 units up 14 percent from 12,259 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales of the Nexon however, dipped 11 percent from 15,567 units sold in Jan 2023. There is the 2024 Nexon SUV in the making and spy shots have been doing the rounds. It is based on the company’s new design philosophy that was also seen on Curvv SUV and Sierra EV at Auto Expo held in January 2023. Tata Motors could also include ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) in the safety package.

At No. 2 was Tata Punch with a 16 percent YoY growth in sales to 11,169 units, up from 9,592 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales however, dipped 7 percent from 12,006 units sold in Jan 2023. Next up was the Tiago, sales of which increased by 66 percent on a YoY basis to 7,457 units in Feb 2023, up from 4,489 units sold in Feb 2022. Sales de-growth was at 17 percent MoM from 9,032 units sold in Jan 2023. Every other model in the company lineup has posted a YoY de-growth in sales while on a MoM basis, it was only Harrier and Safari that saw positive results.

Tata Altroz, Tigor, Harrier and Safari

Tata Altroz has posted a YoY and MoM decline in sales in Feb 2023. Sales fell 21 percent YoY and 30 percent MoM to 3,955 units in the past month. The company had recorded sales of 5,011 units in Feb 2022 and 5,675 units in Jan 2023. Tata Altroz CNG along with the Punch CNG will be launched later this year. These two models made their debut at the 2023 Auto Expo and are set to come in with a twin cylinder CNG tank of 30 liters each, mounted parallel on the boot floor so as to enhance space. Altroz CNG is slated to deliver fuel efficiency of over 25km/kg.

YoY and MoM de-growth was also seen in the case of Tata Tigor down 25 percent YoY to 3,064 units in Feb 2023 from 4,091 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales fell marginally by 1 percent from 3,106 units sold in Jan 2023.

Even as the Harrier and Safari dipped 22 percent and 35 percent YoY to 2,054 units and 1,252 units respectively, performance on a MoM basis was more encouraging. Sales of the Harrier increased by 31 percent from 1,572 units sold in Jan 2023 while Safari sales were higher by 21 percent MoM from 1,032 units sold in Jan 2023.

In Feb 2023, Tata Motors introduced the price hike on the Harrier and Safari. The price increase is by Rs. 47,000 for Harrier and Rs. 66,000 for Safari. It is primarily due to the fact that the company has added new features to these two flagship models among which are ADAS, a larger touchscreen and digital instrument cluster.
