Tata Tiago electric launch likely in 2020 to take on WagonR EV

The year 2020 is going to be an important one in the Indian automotive history as it is set to mark a paradigm shift towards electric vehicles. Several OEMs are gearing up to foray into the zero emission space next year and it seems Tata Motors is eager to join the band wagon as well.

Speaking to Money Control on the sidelines of Harrier launch, Tata Motors Managing Director Guenter Butschek stated that the company may launch an electric vehicle in 2020. However, he also added that the automaker is not committing to the launch at the moment.

The Tata Tiago electric has been ready for a while now. It was even showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. But the firm delayed its launch owing to utter lack of charging infrastructure in the country. A premature launch would not create the required impact due to potential customers’ range anxiety.

The Tiago electric which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2018 is powered by a 85 kW electric motor which dishes out 200 Nm of torque. The lithium-ion battery pack has a claimed range of 100 km. The final production version could be packing a higher capacity battery to make a stronger case for itself but it remains to be seen.

The news of Tiago electric’s possible launch in 2020 comes after Maruti Suzuki has announced that it will introduce its first EV next year, in the form of WagonR electric. Maruti has already started testing the new WagonR electric across India. Recently it was spied in the Kufri region of Shimla, where average low temperature of -9 degrees C is being recorded.

Hyundai India will kick start its EV innings in the coming months with the Kona, as a CKD. Mahindra which is the front runner in the Indian electric vehicle space is preparing to launch KUV100 electric later this year and XUV300 electric next year. Toyota too is working with Suzuki to develop an India-specific green car.

Certainly, more automakers will join the party once the Indian government comes up with transparent and long term policies as well as incentive schemes related to hybrid and electric vehicles.
