Tata Motors will launch a new premium hatchback in India by 2019. Codenamed Tata X451 as of now, the premium hatchback will take on the likes of Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20 once launched. The hatchback which is a part of the automaker’s medium term product onslaught is currently under development. It will make debut as a concept at the 2018 Auto Expo.
From the teasers shared by Tata Motors, it is clear that the new premium hatchback is very bold as far as overall design is concerned. Be it the projector headlamps, LED DRLs, coupe like rear, sporty stance, etc – overall, the teasers look pretty impressive. Some might say that Tata might not offer the same product when launched. But then, we all know what happened with the Nexon (Concept Nexon is almost same as the launched Nexon).
The X541 is based on the new Advanced Modular Platform (AMP) which can be used to underpin an array of products with varying dimensions and body styles. Speaking of the body styles, a sedan version of the X451 is also reported to be on the anvil to rival the Honda City and Maruti Ciaz. But that is for a later time.
It seems Tata will finally realize the vision of a premium sedan which was previewed by the Pininfarina designed Pr1ma concept. Coming back to the hatchback, the Baleno rivals will feature a brand new design language which would be an extension of the IMPACT design theme (now called IMPACT 2.0) which debuted in the Tiago, and is now seen on Tigor and Nexon.
We expect the new Tata hatchback to feature a sleek exterior which finally ditches the familiar Indica silhouette. Peeled back headlamps with projector elements, narrow grille with humanity line, low-mounted foglights with integrated LED daytime running light elements, a low-slung profile and a fresh rear fascia are likely to be the design highlights.
Interior would be inspired by the Nexon’s multi-layered design. One can expect the material quality to be at par with the segment. The Tata X451 premium hatchback would adopt new petrol and diesel engines.
Tata Motors has announced investment to the tune of INR 2,500 crores for their passenger car division. Part of this investment will be used to develop this new Tata hatchback, which will sit above the Bolt in the company line-up.
