The Tata X451 (codename) which was initially known as the Project Dolphin is a product which would slot above the Tiago and below the upcoming Nexon crossover. While it was initially believed to be a premium hatchback, a new report suggests that it would adopt a crossover body style with car-like features.
The X451 which will be based on a new Advanced Modular Platform (AMP) will rival the likes of Mahindra KUV100, Maruti Ignis, Baleno and Hyundai i20.
Livemint reports that development of the SUVish hatchback has been removed from the back burner and expedited as the company gained more confidence after the Tiago’s success. The company has reportedly floated a request for quotation among its suppliers for the project in June.
Initial production target for the X451 is said to be in the ballpark of 25,000 – 35,000 units per year. The company has more than enough installed production capacity across its facilities to accommodate the new product. If things progress as per plans, the KUV100 rival should be market-ready some time in 2017-18.
