Taxi operator Ola offers boat to rescue people in Chennai

Taxi operator Ola offers boat (1)

Even as the Army and Air Force have been called in to rescue stranded people in waterlogged areas of Chennai, Taxi operator Ola has stepped in with boat service which can be booked via their app, just like a taxi.

Chennai is reeling under severe weather conditions over the past few days, heavy rains continue to lash the city and water logging in most parts has left thousands stranded. While all efforts are being made to rescue these persons, Taxi operator Ola has stepped in to help with ferry services.

Ola has deployed boats manned by professional rowers to ferry around 5-9 persons on each trip. These boats are equipped with umbrellas while stranded persons are rowed to safer places out of water logged areas. Ola is also helping in the distribution of essential supplies like food and drinking water to affected areas. Ola has targeted five areas for these rescue operations which include Velachery and Thoraipakkam along the IT corridor.

Taxi operators Ola initiated this idea of rescue operations at the outset of the floods and placed a call to Blue Waters, a Chennai based sport fishing company for the supply of boats. A quick crash course to boatmen to offer preference to senior citizens and not to charge customers followed even as catamarans and inflatable dinghies were pressed into service.

Ola is working on the basis of information received from the Fire and Rescue Department and will be providing this service over the next few days which will be extended in the event of water logging continuing.
