Indian motorsports gets some impetus with three new race tracks being planned. The new tracks are coming up at Hosur in Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad and in Kamshet, near Pune. This new development was confirmed by Akbar Ebrahim, President of Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) last month.
Freddie Spencer, aka Fast Freddie laid the foundation stone of the upcoming race track and proving ground in Kamshet, just outside of Pune. Fast Freddie is a legendary racer, who is not only the youngest racer to win the 500 cc World Championship (in 1983), but also the only racer in the world to win both 250 cc and 500 cc World Championship in the same year (1985).
Once completed, these new race tracks will join the other three race tracks at Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu already has two race tracks with Madras Motor Race Track and the Kari Motor Speedway both of which are FIA Grade 2 tracks while the Buddh International Circuit is an FIA Grade 1 track.
Though these three new race tracks are being supported by FMSCI, they are being built on private investment and not with government support. It is not revealed as to of what grade these tracks will be and whether they will be on par with international tracks.
Indian motorsports has a long way to go. There has been no major international racing series in the country besides the Formula 1 GP held during 2011-13. It is lack of infrastructure that is one of the main reasons for this but with the FMSCI eager to add another three such racing tracks, this scenario is about to get better. More details of these 3 new tracks are expected to be disclosed sometime soon.
More race tracks means enthusiasts have more places to practice and improve their skills. There can be more racing events organized professionally which will nurture young talent.
