Top 10 best selling scooters Sep 2019 – Honda Activa maintains lead

After several months of negative growth, there appears to be some signs of revival in scooter segment. Nine of the top 10 bestselling scooters have registered positive MoM growth in September and some have even bettered their YoY sales. Attractive discounts and benefits announced by scooter manufacturers and festive mood may have contributed to increased scooter sales in September.

Honda Activa continues to be the bestselling scooter in India, registering sales of 2,48,939 units in September 2019. This translates into MoM growth of 6.26%. However, YoY growth remains negative at -12.59%. In September 2018, Activa sales stood at 2,84,809 units. Honda had launched BS-VI variant of Activa in September, which may have also boosted sales. Activa is the first scooter in India to comply with BS-VI emission norms.

TVS Jupiter comes in at second place with sales of 69,049 units in September 2019. That’s MoM growth of 19.36%, the second best among the top ten scooters. However, YoY sales are down -23.87%. TVS Jupiter sales in September 2018 were 90,699 units.

At third place is Suzuki Access with sales of 50,162 units in September 2019. Access is among the scooters that have registered positive growth in both MoM and YoY sales. These figures for Access are 3.12% and 6.88%, respectively. Access sales in September were 46,931 units.

Other scooters in the list include Honda Dio (38,752 units), TVS Ntorq (27,814), Hero Pleasure (20,425), Hero Maestro (14,191), Yamaha Fascino (13,124), Yamaha Ray (10,208) and Hero Destini (9,982). In addition to Suzuki Access, TVS Ntorq and Hero Pleasure have registered positive YoY growth of 33.59% and 23.21%, respectively. All other scooters in the list have negative YoY growth, the highest being that of Hero Maestro at -62.02%.

In MoM sales, only Yamaha Fascino has registered negative growth of -10.43%. At -35.25%, Fascino’s YoY loss is second highest in the list. Other than Fascino, all other scooters have registered positive growth. At 25.25%, Hero Pleasure leads in MoM growth.

Overall, total sales of top10 scooters in September stood at 5,02,646 units. This translates into MoM gain of 7.54% and YoY loss of -12.74%. Sales could improve in October, when the festivities and shopping reach their peak around Diwali.
