Maruti Suzuki Baleno which was at No. 4 in Jan 2023 shot up to a No. 1 position in the past month
Even as there is high demand for SUVs in India the importance of premium hatchbacks cannot be overlooked. Hatchbacks remain a top choice especially among first time buyers in the country, with Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai as leading car brands offering a host of hatchback options. With 7 Maruti Suzuki models on this list, the company continued its dominance in the hatchback segment. Total hatchback sales in Feb 2023 stood at 1,03,500 units, down 1.97 percent YoY from 1,05,584 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales saw a more severe de-growth of 16.39 percent over 1,23,795 units sold in Jan 2023.
Top 10 Hatchbacks Feb 2023 – Maruti Suzuki Baleno Leads the Pack
Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the 5 seater premium hatchback sold via NEXA dealerships, commanded a top spot on the list of best-selling hatchbacks in Feb 2023. Not only at No. 1 on this hatchback list, the Baleno was the best-selling car of Feb 2023. Sales of the Baleno stood at 18,592 units in Feb 2023. This was a 47.91 percent YoY growth from 12,570 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales increased by 13.66 percent from 16,357 units sold in Jan 2023. Market share also improved from 13.21 percent to 17.96 percent on a Mom basis.
Maruti Swift sales dipped YoY by 4.11 percent to 18,412 units, down from 19,202 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales saw an increase by 12 percent from 16,440 units sold in Jan 2023. This took market share up to 17.79 percent in the past month from 13.28 percent held in Jan 2023. Maruti Suzuki Alto was at No. 1 in Jan 2023 with 21,411 units sold during the month. It however slipped to a No. 3 spot last month with 18,114 units sold, a 56.82 percent YoY growth from 11,551 units sold in Feb 2022 while relating to a 15.40 percent MoM decline in sales.
At No 4 was the WagonR also with a YoY growth but MoM decline in sales. Sales which had stood at 20,466 units in Jan 2023 dipped 17.48 percent to 16,888 units in Feb 2023. This was a 3,577 unit volume de-growth. However, on a YoY basis, sales increased by 15.13 percent from 14,669 units sold in Feb 2022. Hyundai has been seeing significant demand for the i10 Nios and i20, both of which have posted YoY and MoM growth. Sales had stood at 9,635 units and 9,287 units respectively in Feb 2023 relating to a 12.66 percent and 59.30 percent YoY growth in sales. Sales of these two hatchbacks also improved MoM by 9.99 percent and 13.46 percent respectively.
Tata Tiago sales increased by 66.12 percent YoY to 7,457 units in Feb 2023. This was against 4,489 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales however, suffered a de-growth of 17.44 percent from 9,032 units sold in Jan 2023. Maruti Suzuki once again stepped into the list of best-selling hatchbacks in Feb 2023 with the Ignis and Celerio. While Ignis sales increased 18.13 percent YoY to 4,749 units from 4,020 units sold in Feb 2022, sales of Celerio dipped by 54.95 percent to 4,458 units in the past month. On the other hand, Ignis sales fell MoM by 18.71 percent but Celerio sales grew by 30.43 percent.
Glanza Overtakes Rival Altroz
Toyota Glanza, which was at No. 12 on the list of best-selling hatchbacks in Jan 2023 gained 2 positions and featured at No. 10 in Feb 2023 with 4,223 units sold. This was a MoM growth of 26.93 percent from 3,327 units sold in Jan 2023. Market share also went up from 2.69 percent to 4.08 percent over the two months in question.
Tata Altroz suffered a 21.07 percent YoY degrowth to 3,955 units in Feb 2023 while MoM sales also dipped 30.31 percent over 5,675 units sold in Jan 2023. Following its official debut at the 2023 Auto Expo in Jan 2023, Tata Motors is set to bring in the Altroz CNG later this year. Altroz CNG promises fuel efficiency of over 25km/kg.
Maruti S-Presso sales dipped 53.80 percent YoY and 6.79 percent MoM to 3,761 units in Feb 2023. It was outstanding demand seen for the Renault Kwid that fell 8.63 percent YoY to 1,758 units in Feb 2023, improved by a whopping 2879.66 percent on a MoM basis from just 59 units sold in Jan 2023. Sales of the Citroen eC3 and C3 stood at 213 units and 111 units respectively in Feb 2023. There had been 788 units of the C3 sold in Jan 2023 relating to an 85.91 percent MoM de-growth.
