Mid-size SUV segment continued to register strong sales in March, with YoY growth of 14.58% and MoM growth of 31.45%
After taking a look at the Sub-compact (sub 4m) SUV and Compact SUV sales, we now take a closer look at the Mid-size SUV sales performance in March 2023. A total of 26,130 mid-size SUVs were sold in March 2023, as compared to 22,805 units in the corresponding period last year. In the top 10 list, only XUV700, Tata Safari and Jeep Compass have negative growth.
Top 10 Mid Size SUVs March 2023 – Scorpio / N leads
Mid-size SUV sales in February 2023 were at 19,879 units. Jeep Compass is the only SUV to register negative MoM growth in March. Citroen C5 Aircross has the highest MoM growth of 1200% in the top 10. Mahindra continues to dominate with the Scorpio Classic, Scorpio N and XUV700 having combined market share of more than 53%.
Scorpio / N sales were at 8,788 units in March 2023. YoY growth is 44.99%, as compared to 6,061 units sold in March 2022. Market share is at 33.63%. Scorpio / N MoM growth is 26.45%, as compared to 6,950 units sold in February 2023. In April, Mahindra had increased prices of both Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N. Scorpio Classic prices were increased in the range of 35k to 67k. Scorpio N prices were raised by up to 46k for petrol variants and up to 58k for diesel variants. April 2023 Scorpio prices range from Rs 13 lakh and goes all the way to Rs 24.52 lakh.
At number two in the list is XUV700 with sales of 5,107 units in March. YoY growth is negative at -15.45%, as compared to 6,040 units sold in March last year. XUV700 market share is at 19.54%. MoM growth is 13.36%, as compared to 4,505 units sold in February 2023. XUV700 prices were also increased in April. Petrol variants have become costlier by up to Rs 74,000, whereas prices of diesel variants have been increased by up to Rs 71,000. XUV700 prices April 2023 range from Rs 14.01 lakh to 26.18 lakh.
Hector and Hector Plus have registered sales of 4,105 units in March. YoY growth is 103.32%, as compared to 2,019 units sold in March last year. Hector and Hector Plus combined market share is at 15.71%. MoM growth is 60.48%, as compared to 2,558 units sold in February 2023. Hector / Hector Plus sales have been rising ever since the next-gen model was launched earlier this year in January. New Hector has received major updates such as 14-inch touchscreen and ADAS. MG Hector range is priced from Rs 14.73 lakh to Rs 22.79 lakh in April 2023.
Harrier, Alcazar close contest continues
Tata Harrier is at fourth place, with sales of 2,561 units in March. YoY growth is 2.81%, as compared to 2,491 units sold in March last year. Market share is at 9.80%. Harrier MoM growth is 24.68%, as compared to 2,054 units sold in February 2023. Tata is working on facelift versions of Harrier and Safari, which are expected to be launched later this year. They will have improved styling and could get a petrol motor. Harrier is priced from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 24.07 lakh.
Following Harrier closely is Hyundai Alcazar, with sales of 2,519 units in March. YoY growth is 0.68%, as compared to 2,502 units sold in March last year. Market share is at 9.64%. Alcazar MoM growth is 61.58%, as compared to 1,559 units sold in February 2023. Alcazar is priced from Rs 16.77 lakh to Rs 21.13 lakh.
Tata Safari is at 6th place, with sales of 1,890 units in March. YoY growth is negative at -15.13%, as compared to 2,227 units sold in March last year. Market share is at 7.23%. Safari MoM growth is 50.96%, as compared to 1,252 units sold in February 2023. Safari is priced from Rs 15.65 lakh to Rs 25.02 lakh. All prices are ex-sh.
Other SUVs in top 10 are Hyundai Tucson (581 units), Jeep Compass (395), Volkswagen Tiguan (132) and Citroen C5 Aircross (52). Tucson and Tiguan have impressive YoY growth at 433.03% and 325.81%, respectively. Jeep Compass YoY growth is negative at -68.97%, whereas there is no change in YoY numbers of C5 Aircross.
