The mid-size SUV segment has registered a decline in sales for April 2021
It may be noted that the mid-size SUV segment is the most popular segment particularly so in Indian markets where new buyers are opting for sub-compact SUVs instead of entry-level hatchbacks. Sales in this section grow significantly each month and every leading automaker in the country is targeting this segment with new and more feature rich offerings.
We look at the top 10 mid-size SUVs sold in India in April 2021 and while we cannot compare it with sales in April 20, we can see that the hot favourite continues to be the Hyundai Creta, leading over all the other mid-size SUVs by a significant margin.
Hyundai Creta April 2021 Sales
Hyundai Creta has recorded sales of 12,463 units in April 2021. It leads the segment by a significant margin over the Kia Seltos of which 8,086 units were sold last month. The Hyundai Creta was launched in 2015 and till date, the company has sold 5.8 lakh units in domestic markets and exported 2.16 lakh units.
Kia India has been a relatively newcomer to the Indian automobile sector with the Seltos, Sonet and Carnival. The Seltos became the best-selling Kia car in April 2021 with 8,086 units sold while it also helped the company achieve a target of 2,50,000 sales milestone in the Indian market in just 22 months since its entry into the country.
Mahindra Scorpio was at No.3 on the list of top 10 best-selling mid-size SUVs in April 2021 with sales of 3,577 units. Scorpio is one of the company leading models in terms of sales and in March 2021, sales stood at 2,331 units. Mahindra is also working on the next gen Scorpio which is slated for launch along with the XUV700 just ahead of the festive season.
At No.4 on the list was the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross with sales of 2,247 units in April 21. The S-Cross was also at No. 4 in March sales which had stood at 2,535 units. This flagship model sold via the company’s NEXA outlets is priced between Rs.8.39-12.39 lakhs.
Top 10 mid-size SUV sales also included the MG Hector of which 2,147 units were sold last month. The company has failed to sustain growth in April with total sales of 2,565 units, a significant dip from 5,528 units sold in March 21, the month when the company reported its best ever sales since it commenced its Indian operations.
Tata Harrier and Safari
Tata Harrier, Safari outsold the MG Hector Twins in April 2021 by a significant margin. Even though positioned lower in the list of top 10 mid-size SUVs, there were 1,712 units of the Harrier and 1,514 units of the Safari sold in April 2021 taking totals to 3,226 units, outselling MG Hector and Hector Plus by 52.26 percent or 2,147 units.
Lower down the order were the Jeep Compass and Mahindra XUV00 of which 846 units and 717 units were sold respectively while coming up at No. 10 was the recently launched Citroen C5 Aircross with 220 units sold. Upcoming launches in this segment will include the Hyundai Alcazar, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and Mahindra XUV700.
