The Indian automobile sector is in the throes of deep slowdown. The situation has been much the same over the past few months and shows little sign of improvement any time in the near future. This slowdown has not only affected the four wheeler segment but even the two wheeler segment has been posting de-growth.
Total motorcycle sales of models that made it to the top 10 list stood at 7,70,072 units in July 2019; down 18.31 percent as compared to sales of 9,42,671 units sold in July 2018. They are down 13.14 percent as compared to sales of 8,86,543 units sold in June 2019.
Hero MotoCorp, the largest two wheeler maker in the country reported a dip of 21 percent in overall sales in July 2019. However, it did have four of its models on the list of top 10 motorcycles sold during the past month.
Hero Splendor featured at the top of this list despite registering decline of 31.42 percent. Total sales in the past month stood at 1,78,907 units, down from 2,60,865 units sold in July 2018 and 26.30 percent lower as compared to sales in June 2019 when 2,42,743 units of the Splendor were sold.
Hero HF Deluxe sales also dipped 7.66 percent in July 2019 to 1,69,632 units as compared to sales of 1,83,694 units sold in July 2018. It may be noted that sales in July 2019 were 12.20 percent lower as compared to sales in June 2019 which stood at 1,93,194 units.
It was also the Hero Glamour that made it to this list at No. 4 spot. It was this model that reported de- growth in July 2019 with 71,160 units sold as compared to 74,553 units sold in July 2018. Sales of the Glamour however increased 1.83 percent in the past month when compared to sales of 69,878 units sold in June 2019.
Hero MotoCorp found its Passion motorcycle on the list at No.7 with 43,439 units sold, down 50.84 percent as compared to 88,354 units sold in July 2018 and down 22.63 percent as compared to 56,143 units sold in June 2019.
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India had the CB Shine at No. 3 spot and the Honda CB Unicorn at No. 10 among the top selling motorcycles in July 2019 with both bikes showing positive growth. Sales of the CB Shine increased 9.75 percent to 94,559 units in the past month as against sales of 86,160 units sold in July 2018. Sales were also higher as compared by 11.41 percent as compared to sales of 84,871 units sold in June 2019.
Honda CB Unicorn at No. 10 saw sales increase 14.13 percent to 28,250 units in July 2019. This was as against sales of 24,753 units sold in the same month of the previous year while sales also increased 3.67 percent as compared to sales of 27,249 units sold in June 2019.
Bajaj Auto Limited had three motorcycles on this list. These included the Pulsar at No. 5, Platina at No. 6 and CT 100 at No. 8. Sales of the Pulsar dipped 1.45 percent in the past month. Sales which had stood at 63,388 units in July 2018 dipped to 62,469 units last month while this was a significant dip in sales by 24.74 percent as compared to 83,008 units sold in June 2019.
Sales of the Bajaj Platina increased significantly by 30.98 percent to 52,489 units in July 2019 as compared to 40,074 units sold in July 2018. However, sales suffered a de-growth by 7.83 percent as compared to sales of 56,947 units sold in June 2019.
The Bajaj CT100 saw sales dip 48.25 percent in July 2019 to 39,728 units as against sales of 76,776 units sold in July 2018. It was however, a 2.60 percent increase as compared to 38,720 units sold in June 2019.
Royal Enfield’s Classic 350 was at No.9 on the list of top 10 best selling motorcycles in July 2019 with sales of 29,439 units. This was a 33.18 percent de-growth as compared to sales of 44,054 units sold in July 2018 and a 12.88 percent de-growth as compared to sales of 33,790 units sold in June 2019.
