The Hyundai Elite i20 bucked the trend by becoming the first non-Maruti car to break into the top 4 best selling cars in India. In the month of April 2016, the premium hatchback clocked 11,147 units to lead its segment and push the Maruti Dzire compact sedan out of the top 4.
The change in the pecking order can be attributed to slumping sales of the Dzire rather than a surge in the i20’s numbers. It’s worth noting that the premium hatchback’s sales performance was down by 10.2% compared to the same duration in 2015. In comparison, rival Baleno managed to post sales of 9,562 units in the month of April 2016 which puts it in 8th place.
The Renault Kwid did well enough to claim 7th spot in the list with sales of 9,795 units. With increased production, the French carmaker is confident of maintaining the strong average in the coming months. The Maruti Alto continues to top the chart but at 16,583 units, sales have dropped by 23.9% compared to the same period last year.
The Maruti Wagon R (No. 3), Hyundai Grand i10 (No. 6) and Maruti Omni (No. 10) are the only cars that posted YoY growth in April 2016. Mahindra Bolero, Honda City and Hyundai Eon which were featured in the list of top 10 best selling cars in India for April 2015 had dropped out.
